My List of Disney Lists

disney-world-vacation-planning

I like to make lists. That is no secret, and I do not apologize for it. Organization is important – and it’s especially important when you’re taking your family on a vacation! Forgetting something (like your cell phone charger or spare camera battery…) can impact your entire trip, so I find its best to plan ahead as much as possible. I like to make SEVERAL different lists when preparing for my Walt Disney World vacations – here’s a rundown of them:

-Souvenir List – having been to WDW many times, I know what kinds of souvenirs they have, and what kinds of things I can actually enjoy/get a lot of use out of. Kitchen items, mugs, playing cards, pens – these are the kinds of things I like to plan to buy, and having a list of what I might want to get helps keep my budget on track. I use the Disney Store website to help ballpark costs of some of the items, which helps too!

-Budget – Ok, this one isn’t really a “list”, but its still a REALLY important part of vacation planning – knowing how much things cost and about how much you will need to save is imperative. Some things I always include in a Disney trip budget are: hotel, park tickets, food costs (don’t forget tips and “adult” drinks too!), souvenirs, transportation, and incidentals (someone loses their hat, or we run out of sunscreen, etc)

-Packing list – You HAVE to make a list of what’s going to go in your suitcase – you don’t want to forget anything important! I like to make the list a few weeks before the trip, and I do it on my phone so that I can add items as I think of them. I also like to check the weather so that I know what I can expect – things like ponchos and sunscreen are always on my list, and I like to make sure I have some snacks for traveling and all my necessary chargers too. Now that I have a son too, packing has become this HUGE undertaking –and I now need a separate list so I can make sure I have everything he needs too – so if you have kids, packing lists are even more important

-Park Items – There are some items you will want to make sure you are toting along on your Park days – sunscreen, assorted sizes of Ziploc baggies, ponchos, snacks, sunglasses, and a lightweight hoodie are some of the things that go into the backpack we bring when we head to one of the WDW theme parks

-“Must-Do’s” – Before you go to Disney World, check out their official list of rides/attractions and go over it with your family. Decide which ones are on your “must do” list and make sure you have that handy while at the Parks. This should be a pretty short list – as you don’t want to try and do too much in a day or you’ll get burnt out!

-“Must-Eat” items – Disney is a food lover’s paradise – they have all kinds of cuisine and restaurants, and it’s a good idea to know what they have and what you might want to try. This is an especially good thing to do if you have any type of special diet or food allergy – it’s good to know which places can accommodate your needs

Hopefully this “list of lists” will be helpful to you– maybe you can use some (or all!) of them to help ensure your WDW vacation goes smoothly!

New Airline Carry-on Size Restrictions Can’t Ruin MY Magical Disney Trip!

Luggage

Between United Airlines enforcing their carry on baggage size limits, and the recent security checkpoint monitoring of luggage sizes, it’s enough to turn the start of any trip into a disaster! New rules even further limit the size of your carry-on luggage on major airlines like Delta, United, and American (with smaller ones being sure to follow suit soon, I’m sure!), and not only that, but they are actually enforcing the size limits too, which is something that was never really consistently done in the past.

Obviously I understand that people can’t be bringing huge bags on as carry ons – as its totally not fair to those of us who have always followed the (previously unenforced) rules – but now you’re telling me that the rolling luggage I have been toting for the past 5 years, that I purposely researched and scoured the internet for to make sure I got one that fit ALL airline size restrictions – is now too big to carry on? Well – ok. Breath, and regroup – I will NOT be letting this ruin my future trips to Walt Disney World – it just means I have to be smarter about how I pack. How will I do this? Well – I have a few tried and true tricks up my sleeve…

Wear the big stuff: I always bring one pair of jeans, one pair of sneakers, and one hoodie to Disney with me – and I always wear them to the airport – even if it’s warm out, chances are good it will be cold in the airports/on the planes, and this saves me a TON of suitcase space!

-If I can get it online, I will WAIT to Buy it: There are so many great Disney souvenirs that I have serious trouble not buying ALL of them – and with even less suitcase space, I will be bringing even less home with me, but the good news is a lot of the same items can be purchased via the Disney Store’s website (they even have a Disney Parks Products section!). So I wait until I am home (or in the airport waiting for my flight home anyway…) and then I order some of the larger souvenir items online instead

-Keep it Casual: Disney isn’t exactly a fancy place, so there’s not much need for dresses or heels or button down shirts- t shirts and shorts will do for most people, and I like to stick to that idea when I am packing – nothing fancy, and just 1 shirt per day (you don’t need more than one, trust me)

-Don’t forget about your “personal item”: in addition to your carry on piece of luggage, each passenger is allowed 1 personal item too – basically anything that will fit under the seat in front of you is allowable – a large purse, tote bag, or even a backpack will all work – and I take full advantage of this and make sure I bring my biggest purse and stuff it full of snacks, books, magazines, and a change of clothes (just in case they make me check my 1 inch too large carry on suitcase…)

I stopped checking luggage a few years ago – so I have really been working on perfecting my carry-on packing – and I can say from experience that it really is possible to get everything you need for a week at Disney in a carry on suitcase and a purse/backpack. As for these new regulations, I say bring it on! I love a challenge, and I will do my best to get everything in my carry-on items, and even if I can’t or they tell me I have to check them – at least the end result is still the same – a vacation at the Happiest Place On Earth! What about you – do you avoid checking luggage when you head to WDW?

Planning 101: Packing For Disney

Disney-Embossed_Faces

I love all aspects of planning when it comes to my Walt Disney World vacation – from Itinerary making to dining reservations to reading guidebooks and blogs and websites, and I even love PACKING – making a list and checking it twice really makes me feel like I am ready to take on the World (the DISNEY World that is!)

So what are the Top 5 MUST PACK Items on my list?

A Filtered Water Bottle: I bring one of those Brita water bottles with me to Disney – not because I’m someone who will only drink filtered water – but because the water at Disney does NOT taste great – filtering helps make it more palatable, plus I don’t want to pay $3 for a bottled beverage every time I get thirsty (which is pretty much all the time while walking all day in the Florida heat!)

Ziploc Baggies: When they say “Caution, You May Get Wet!” while you’re waiting in line at Splash Mountain – they aren’t kidding! I prepare for this and other “wet” rides by carrying Ziploc baggies in several sizes in my bag that I bring along to the Parks – when getting on a potentially wet ride, I stash my cell phone, wallet, and camera in sealed baggies – it works perfectly! This is also a must because it rains a LOT in Florida – like daily showers in the summer, so you will definitely want to be prepared for that

Ponchos: Like the baggies, they are a must have for the ever-changing Florida weather – I picked up some cheap ones at the dollar store, or nicer ones are available at Target/Wal-Mart. You can buy them in the Parks too, but they are more expensive and not all stores carry them – so I prefer to be prepared and bring my own

Sneakers: Yes, it tends to be warm in Orlando Florida, but does that mean I just toss some flip flops in my suitcase and go? HECK NO! You can’t expect to last all day on your feet in flip flops or regular flat sandals – you will be in a LOT of pain and as dorky as sneakers with socks paired with shorts may sometimes look, packing comfortable walking shoes is an absolute must (trust me, I learned this one the hard way!)

Medications: I always make sure I have all my prescriptions refilled and that I have enough to get through my trip a few weeks before I go, but aside from that, I also like to pack a little “mobile pharmacy” – band-aids and neosporin, Tylenol, Sudafed, cough drops, Airborne, Day-Quil and Ny-Quil, Tums and Pepto Bismol, and Kleenex packs are the main items I always carry with me on vacation – some of these are available at shops within the Disney Parks and Resorts, but they are costly, and they don’t always carry what you need – and getting to a CVS or Walgreen’s off property without a car can be a pain for sure – so be safe and bring these items along with you – you probably won’t need them, but if you do, trust me – you’ll be glad you packed them!

These are the most important items on my packing list – there are obviously other essentials – cash, cell phone charger, extra underwear and socks, snacks, etc – they are all important in helping keep you happy while visiting the Happiest Place On Earth!

Packing Light For Disney

MickeyMin PackingPacking for a Disney World vacation can be a daunting task, there are a lot of things you will want to bring along (and if I were you, I recommend you bring along all the items on my Disney Survival Kit list), BUT, I know how important it can also be to pack light, no one wants to lug around a huge suitcase, and in our case, we have had some issues with airlines losing luggage, and try not to check bags when we travel

So what do we bring? Our rule of thumb is generally to bring “one of everything” – one pair of sneakers, one pair of jeans, one hoodie, one nice outfit, one pair of dressier shoes, etc. Yeah, you might have to re-wear something, and worse comes to worse if you spill something on your one pair of jeans, all Disney Resorts have laundry facilities on site

Another thing we do to save space is to wear the big stuff – the hoodie, jeans, and sneakers tend to take up the most space in the suitcase, so we make sure we wear those while traveling

When it comes to souvenirs, we make sure we are buying small items that we will definitely be able to fit into our bags. Our fave items? Disney pins, playing cards, pens, shot glasses, and postcards are all compact, easy to pack, fun items to bring back as trip momentos. Oh, and don’t forget about the best souvenir of all, the trip photos, which luckily don’t take up any space at all when stored in the camera!

My motto for packing is “When in doubt, leave it out!” which may seem silly, but if you find you arrive at WDW and you forgot to pack something, the Resort gift shops and nearby stores have almost anything you could need, so don’t worry – pack the essentials and get going!
