Easy Ways To Save For Your WDW Trip

TGIFCastle

Trips to Walt Disney World are so many things – amazing, fun, thrilling – but they can also be expensive (sorry to be the bearer of bad news…but its true!), which is why I like to do as much advance planning as possible to try and make sure I’m sticking to my budget. But there are plenty of great ways you and your family can save for your Disney trip:

Gift Cards: If you have a birthday coming up, or Christmas is coming, or you are planning a Disney honeymoon – then ask for Disney Gift Cards as wedding/birthday/Christmas gifts! They can be purchased at any store with a gift card center, and they can be used pretty much anywhere in the Parks – for food, souvenirs, and they can even be put towards your trip balance!

A Spare Change Jar: Put all those pennies/nickels/dimes/quarters to good use and toss them in a change jar to be used towards your vacation. Counting how much you have saved can be a fun family activity, and you can even decorate a container just for this purpose

Set Up An Automatic Transfer: Most banks that have online access (which is most of them these days!) have the ability to allow you to setup a recurring transfer – to move a certain amount of money from one account to another daily/weekly/on payday, etc. This is a great way to set money aside in a savings account or alternate checking account for all kinds of things – but I like to use it for a vacation fund! You probably won’t miss $10 a week, and $10 a week equals $520 a year saved for Disney!

One Less Meal Out: By decreasing the amount of times you eat out/order takeout by once a month, you can save a lot! It is much cheaper to eat at home (and usually healthier!) and you are looking at a savings of $20-$40 per month just by eating at home one more time a month

These are my top Disney money saving tips – mostly because they are EASY and EFFECTIVE and they help get me to that Castle sooner! But I would love to know how YOU save money for your trips to the Happiest Place On Earth?

Planning 101: Packing For Disney

Disney-Embossed_Faces

I love all aspects of planning when it comes to my Walt Disney World vacation – from Itinerary making to dining reservations to reading guidebooks and blogs and websites, and I even love PACKING – making a list and checking it twice really makes me feel like I am ready to take on the World (the DISNEY World that is!)

So what are the Top 5 MUST PACK Items on my list?

A Filtered Water Bottle: I bring one of those Brita water bottles with me to Disney – not because I’m someone who will only drink filtered water – but because the water at Disney does NOT taste great – filtering helps make it more palatable, plus I don’t want to pay $3 for a bottled beverage every time I get thirsty (which is pretty much all the time while walking all day in the Florida heat!)

Ziploc Baggies: When they say “Caution, You May Get Wet!” while you’re waiting in line at Splash Mountain – they aren’t kidding! I prepare for this and other “wet” rides by carrying Ziploc baggies in several sizes in my bag that I bring along to the Parks – when getting on a potentially wet ride, I stash my cell phone, wallet, and camera in sealed baggies – it works perfectly! This is also a must because it rains a LOT in Florida – like daily showers in the summer, so you will definitely want to be prepared for that

Ponchos: Like the baggies, they are a must have for the ever-changing Florida weather – I picked up some cheap ones at the dollar store, or nicer ones are available at Target/Wal-Mart. You can buy them in the Parks too, but they are more expensive and not all stores carry them – so I prefer to be prepared and bring my own

Sneakers: Yes, it tends to be warm in Orlando Florida, but does that mean I just toss some flip flops in my suitcase and go? HECK NO! You can’t expect to last all day on your feet in flip flops or regular flat sandals – you will be in a LOT of pain and as dorky as sneakers with socks paired with shorts may sometimes look, packing comfortable walking shoes is an absolute must (trust me, I learned this one the hard way!)

Medications: I always make sure I have all my prescriptions refilled and that I have enough to get through my trip a few weeks before I go, but aside from that, I also like to pack a little “mobile pharmacy” – band-aids and neosporin, Tylenol, Sudafed, cough drops, Airborne, Day-Quil and Ny-Quil, Tums and Pepto Bismol, and Kleenex packs are the main items I always carry with me on vacation – some of these are available at shops within the Disney Parks and Resorts, but they are costly, and they don’t always carry what you need – and getting to a CVS or Walgreen’s off property without a car can be a pain for sure – so be safe and bring these items along with you – you probably won’t need them, but if you do, trust me – you’ll be glad you packed them!

These are the most important items on my packing list – there are obviously other essentials – cash, cell phone charger, extra underwear and socks, snacks, etc – they are all important in helping keep you happy while visiting the Happiest Place On Earth!

“My Disney Experience” Makes WDW Planning Easy And Fun!

I am a planner. It’s in my blood. I can’t help it. I like to be organized, and to have itineraries and lists and all that jazz – especially when it comes to vacations. And now – thanks to the “My Disney Experience” app and website – planning for Walt Disney World trips has gotten much easier – and more fun!

The website allows you to create a profile (complete with a Disney Character pic to complement your personality!) and once you are setup, you can link your Resort reservations, as well as Dining ADR’s, and you can even add which fireworks shows and parades you want to see, as well as fastpass+ reservations

I have been playing around with it for about a week now, and It’s pretty cool – It pulls up a calendar style list of your daily dining/faspasses/shows, and you can add other people to it or share plans with other Disney fans

I also have the app on my iphone – and it is also easy to use, and the information I save on the online website easily transfers to the app and is immediately available for viewing

I suggest you check it out – it can help you organize your trip, plus it is something you can do to get excited about the fact that you’re DISNEY BOUND!

Packing For The Parks – What To Bring

My husband – sporting a poncho and our messenger bag filled with Park essentials!

There are a lot of ways you can prepare for your Walt Disney World vacation, including mapping out your days, making your Advance Dining Reservations, and reading guidebooks. Another way you can (and should!) get ready is to pack the things you will need while at the Parks – here are some that I never leave home without:

Sneakers – ok, so you aren’t going to bring these with you to the Parks, obviously you will actually WEAR them, but it’s really important to wear some supportive, broken in sneakers – as you will be walking many miles a day while touring. And even though it may be hot, and those flip flops may seem like a good choice, trust me, they are NOT – stick with sneakers, your feet will thank you!

Water Bottle – fill it up with ice and water before you leave your Resort and make sure to keep drinking up all day! The Florida heat can really take it’s toll and this is one of the ways you can fight against it!

Sunscreen – Bring it. wear it. reapply every hour. It is a pain, but it’s worth it. Like the heat, the Florida sun can be brutal too – and a sunburn can ruin any vacation!

Tylenol – or whatever your preferred medicine is for aches/pains/headaches. WDW is a loud place, and you don’t want to be caught without something to help relieve that headache that came on suddenly while you were in line for Space Mountain!

Ponchos – Florida weather can be….unpredictable at best. Hot and sunny one minute, thunder and pouring rain the next….so buy some ponchos at home (I get ours in 2 packs from the dollar store) and bring them with you. Various retailers sell them around the Parks, but it’s much easier to bring your own than trying to scramble to buy some at the last minute

Snacks/Candy – For a quick boost when I don’t feel like stopping at a snack cart or restaurant, I pack some granola bars or hard candies, anything small that I can eat while in a line or waiting for a bus/boat

Ziploc Baggies – I usually bring a few of these in assorted sizes, so I can put my wallet/cell phone in them when riding the more ‘wet’ rides – like Splash Mountain. They are also great for saving the part of that giant Mickey cookie you couldn’t finish for later!

I like to pack everything in a messenger bag or backpack which my husband and I can take turns carrying, and we have found that these are all invaluable items to have with us while enjoying Disney!
