T.G.I.F. Pic Of The Week – Going To The (Disney!) Dogs

Today is our family dog’s birthday – Mollie is a beautiful chocolate lab celebrating her EIGHTH birthday! I can’t believe she is 8 (makes me feel old!) – she is still so puppy like in so many ways! She is full of life and love – and we are so grateful to have her in our family!

Puppy Mollie

Here she is as a little baby – giving my husband a high five

 ThreeDogs

Here she is with our other family dogs – my boy Walter on the right and his sister Lucy on the left belongs to my parents – can you tell I am holding a treat?

MOLLIE ANDREW

And here Mollie is with her main man – my husband Andrew. She has been enamored with him since the very day she laid eyes on him. Mollie may live at my parent’s house, but her heart belongs to Andrew – they are quite the pair aren’t they?

…Clearly we are dog people, in case you couldn’t tell. Our love for dogs extends beyond our own – we love getting the chance to meet with some of our favorite Disney Dogs too!

Pluto Dog

Mickey’s best pal Pluto is always good for a hug

Goofy Dog

Goofy always makes me smile!

Doug Up

Next up on the Disney Dog list would be to get to meet Doug from UP! Maybe I can ask him if he likes squirrels..hmm…

Happy Birthday to my girl Mollie, and Happy Friday to all! TGIF!

Frozen – I don’t Get It. Still.

Frozen

I have written about how I gave the movie Frozen two chances – I watched it twice and I will admit I definitely appreciated it more the second time – HOWEVER – I will also admit – I still do NOT understand Frozen. The popularity/hype/intensity – people are seriously obsessed with this movie – and it’s not just kids either – adults are jumping on the bandwagon too!

Waiting 5 hours to meet Anna and Elsa at the Disney Parks. A New Frozen ride at Disney. Thousands of parodies of “Let It Go” on YouTube. “Sexy” Frozen Halloween Costumes (yeah, that’s really a thing), the MOST INSANE amount of merchandising I have ever seen for a single movie in my whole life…it all seems…excessive, and I fear I may stand alone on this one – but I just don’t get it.

Now – don’t get me wrong, I love a good Disney movie – but in my book – Frozen barely qualifies as a “good” movie – I mean, it’s cute, the songs are great, the characters are somewhat amusing – but overall – mediocre at best. It certainly can’t hold a flame to Cinderella (my absolute fave!), or Toy Story, or Finding Nemo…I could go on (but I won’t). I am glad that Disney is getting so much mileage out of Frozen, and that it was such a hit for them – but really? I’m over it. I am sorry if this offends you….and if it does then maybe you should learn to “Let It Go” (ha!), Seriously though – Disney – can we move on to something bigger and better? Please? I would appreciate it – and I can’t be alone in thinking that way…right?

Saying Farewell To The World’s Greatest Genie – Robin Williams

I am sure that by now, you have all heard the shocking news of Robin William’s death which occurred Monday evening. America has had so many laughs thanks to him and his many movie roles and stand up acts, and he will always be remembered for the joy he brought to us all.

Robin-Williams-Genie

Aladdin was one of the first movies I remember seeing in the theater, and I watched it so much I wore out the VHS (remember those?). The main reason this movie was such a hit can really be attributed to Robin William’s amazing portrayal of the Genie – he made us laugh and as we all know, laughter can cure whatever ails you!

Unfortunately, laughter wasn’t enough for Robin, as he had some internal battles that he was dealing with which ultimately lead to his death, you can read more about the demons that plagued the actor here

RIP Robin – your legacy will live on for generations to come, and thanks for making me laugh when I really needed it

I FINALLY Saw Saving Mr. Banks – And LOVED IT!

Saving Mr banks

Ok, so I am a bit behind in my movie viewing – but I finally saw Saving Mr. Banks last night – and I LOVED IT! I honestly was holding off as I wasn’t sure how I would like it – I had seen clips and previews and I knew how Emma Thompson would be portraying PL Travers – I knew she would be tough and unlikeable, so I honestly didn’t know if I wanted to bother with it – But I am glad I did! The story was heartfelt and I even shed a few tears (don’t judge me!)

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the story, here’s a rundown: it’s set in the 1960’s, and the premise is that Walt Disney (played by the always charismatic Tom Hanks) is trying to convince author PL Travers to allow him to purchase the rights to her Mary Poppins character and story. This has been going on for 20 years of him trying to convince her, and finally she agrees to come to Walt Disney Studios in California and meet with him. She is stubborn to a fault with her vision for the movie, with crazy demands and script changes, as we watch the story come together through bits of song (familiar ones like “Let’s go fly a kite” and “A Spoonful of Sugar”), drawings, flashbacks, and arguments. PL Travers is hesitant to give up the story partly due to her troubled past – a past we see unfold and one that Walt sympathizes with and that allows him to connect with her on a deeper level.

Without being too much of a spoiler, I wanted to share my favorite moment of the movie. PL Travers arrives in LA and walks into her hotel suite, which is filled with Disney merchandise – stuffed Mickeys, Minnies, Goofys, Donald, Chip and Dale – the whole gang is there to welcome her. She is of course disgusted by this silly display and shoves it all in the closet. Just when she thinks she is done, she walks into the bedroom to find a GIANT Mickey Mouse stuffed toy on the bed!

The movie truly did a great job combining humor and drama into the movie, and it truly was a great film. I highly recommend you rent it today!

Celebrate Your Next Big Occasion with a Disney Theme Party!

Ok, so I must admit – the reason for this post is partly selfish – as I just recently found out my husband and I are expecting our first little Mouseketeer – due in October! We are thrilled, and of course I have been in overload thinking of things we need to get and buy and prepare and reading books and napping (the napping being one of the better parts of pregnancy I think!), and one thing that has already been brought up to me by one of my closest friends is my baby shower – and she suggested it be a Disney themed shower! Obviously I didn’t really have to think about that one – and she has already gone full steam ahead with thinking about décor, favors, and more! I am super grateful to have her and other friends and family helping plan such a great event for our soon to be little guy or gal, and ideas have been flying around for various things – which got me curious about Disney parties in general – as I will likely be wanting to have some for my child in the future, so I wondered – exactly what is involved in a “Disney Themed” party?

Well, the short answer is – A LOT! You can really go as far as you want with something like that, from the big to the small details – everything can be customized to fit your theme. Let’s take something classic like Mickey, for example. And start with something everyone will notice – the décor:

Mickey party decor 2

Banners, signs, tablecloths, plates, and more can be created or purchased featuring Mickey himself

Micket Party food 2

The FOOD is probably my personal favorite part of ANY party – and if you’ve got a Mickey Cookie cutter – you can pretty much make any food mickey shaped! Like sandwiches, brownies, cookies, cheese and meats for deli platters, and much more

Mickey Party Cake

Most celebrations involve some kind of sweet ending – usually in the form of CAKE! You can buy a Mickey cake pan at most craft store chains, or go rogue with your own design

Mickey Party Favors 2

Party favors are common at a lot of birthday parties and baby/wedding showers, and usually are just something simple and small – for kids you could do a goodie bag with stickers/crayons/coloring pages etc, or candy, or you could make something all on your own – like individually wrapped Mickey shaped cookies

Not sure where to start? Think about the following questions:
-What’s the guest of honor’s favorite Disney movie/character?
-What did that character love to do?
-What did they eat in that movie?
-What colors does the character always wear?
-What is the one item that symbolizes that movie/character? (For example – Winnie The Pooh has his Hunny Pot, and the movie Cinderella can be summed up with a glass slipper!)

Once you have answers to these questions, you should have a handle on your theme, menu, favors, games, and décor! Check out Pinterest for tons of great ideas – as with anything crafty or food related, the site is bursting with blog posts and pictures and recipes to help make your theme party the talk of the town! You don’t even have to wait until a birthday/baby shower to use some of these ideas – you can do a Disney movie night, or a sleepover, or anything really!

Oh – and as a tip for those who are slightly less crafty/DIY inclined – Disney party supplies can be purchased at places like Party City – and they offer a pretty decent selection too – from cutlery and plates/napkins, to décor and favors – it’s all there and ready to help you host the perfect Disney themed bash
