T.G.I.F. Pic Of The Week – 5 Years Of Laughter & Love

Today my husband and I are celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary! It’s hard to believe it’s been 5 years already – the time seems like it has flown by! Today I want to reminisce a little about the time I’ve spent as half of a married couple – and of course by reminisce I mean check out some of our Disney memories!

TGIF Characters

HappyHourBig River

We spend our honeymoon in Walt Disney World – June is a hot, sticky, wet month in Orlando – but we still managed to have a lot of fun! It was the first time I had been back to Disney since I was a teenager – and it was my first time as an adult (without my parents!) and I loved being able to explore and re-visit things as an adult, and a new wife too!

Disney World in December is amazing – we went mid-month, and also went to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – which was a ton of fun. The weather was nice and mild, and getting to see all the amazing Christmas décor everywhere put us in the Christmas spirit for sure!

Ice cream on a hot afternoon at Disney? Yes, please. And thank you. And I will even share (because that’s how much I love him!)

Everyone enjoys meeting characters – and this was an especially awesome day – Christmas morning at 1900 Park Fare – amazing food, and awesome characters – and a great time making memories with my husband too!

It’s been 5 years of laughs, fights, hugs, tears, kisses, buying a house, getting a dog, having a kid – and I personally wouldn’t trade a minute of it for anything!

Here’s to a million more memories

T.G.I.F. Pic Of The Week – California Grill Set To Open With A New Look AND A New Menu!

One of Disney’s most popular restaurants – the California Grill – has been closed for renovations for months now, and it’s finally set to open back up at the end of August – with new décor, and more importantly, new FOOD!

TGIF Cali Grill Three-Meatball-Appetizer

Start out with some delicious meatballs as your appetizer

TGIF Cali Grill Halibut

Then check out this amazingly presented Halibut

TGIF Dessert-Trio-California-Grill

And of course, you should ALWAYS save room for dessert…like this sundae sampler

TGIF Chocolate-Pudding-Cake-600x336

Or this chocolate pudding mousse – how rich and decadent does THAT look?

I have to admit – personally, I was not too impressed with California Grill when I dined here in April of 2012, but these new menu items are making me wonder if I could give it another chance? Hmm…so many WDW restaurant options, so little time!

T.G.I.F. Pic Of The Week – What A View!

There are so many amazing things about Walt Disney World – The Parks The Rides, The Food…..etc…that it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the experience of it all!

Sometimes it’s worthwhile just to step back and take a look at your surroundings – you’ll find there’s really a LOT to see:

If you choose to stay at WDW’s Animal Kingdom Lodge -this could be the view off your balcony of the savannah, where you can watch the animal roam about (yep, those are giraffes out there!)

TGIF Views Tree AKThe Tree Of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is really something – its amazing to gaze at, but I also suggest that you get up close and personal with it and check out all the amazing animal engravings and designs – it’s a real work of art

TGIF Views CaliGrillThe view from the balcony at California Grill at the top of the Contemporary Resort – you can really see it all, and it’s quite the spot for firework viewing too!

TGIF Views MainStAnd my all time personal favorite view – standing at the base of Main Street, where you can get a great view of Cinderella’s Castle. Standing here makes me feel like I have come home

Talk about some great views!

WDW – A Sushi Lover’s Heaven

When I was a kid, Walt Disney World food was nothing special – typical burgers, chicken fingers, and soft drinks you would find at any other theme park across the US. But over the last 10 years, they have really been stepping up their game in the culinary arena – there are truly delicious restaurants that serve ALL kinds of food

For those of you who love sushi, you don’t have to worry about going without it while vacationing at WDW – there are plenty of places where you can get your fill!

Some form of packaged sushi is available at almost all counter service eateries at the Walt Disney World Resort Hotels, usually just some vegetable rolls and cooked shrimp options, nothing too spectacular but its always fresh and easy to grab on your way to/from the Parks. Or, in the case of Disney’s Polynesian Resort, a whole sushi bar (and sake!) awaits you!

Head over to Japan in Epcot’s World showcase for some amazing sushi options, available at their sit down and counter service eateries, and they’re authentic, fresh, and delicious!

If you’re in the mood for a sit down meal, I recommend the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort – which comes with a great view of the Magic Kingdom’s nightly fireworks show, or the Flying Fish Cafe over at the Boardwalk Resort – which is the perfect place to take a sunset stroll

And those are just a few of the options available to those sushi lovers out there – check out the Disney Restaurant Menus on Just don’t do it when you’re hungry – it may cause actual drooling!

T.G.I.F. Pic Of The Week – Hungry For More

I LOVE taking pictures, so when I go on vacation, it’s like picture taking overload, especially at Walt Disney World where there is so much to see….and EAT. Yes, I admit it, I am one of those food-picture-taking-instagram-my-meals people, and I know some people think its weird, but I think getting to try new and different foods is one of the best parts about vacation, especially at a place like Walt Disney World, where the dining options are so plentiful!

So here are some of my favorite meals from recent WDW trips

Bangers and Mash at Raglan Road Irish Pub in Downtown Disney – the sausage was amazing, and so was everything else about this dish! We have been back to Raglan Road on later trips, and every item we have eaten has been delicious, including the fish fry and steak!

Crystal Palace

An assorted plate of goodies from the braekfast buffet at the Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom. Everything was delicious – from the biscuits, to the breakfast pizza, to the Mickey waffles – all freshly prepared for our enjoyment! The Crystal Palace serves 3 meals a day buffet style with Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet making the rounds for autographs and hugs. I have eaten all three meals here, and while breakfast is my favorite, they do a great job at lunch and dinner too!

Chicken Enchiladas at San Angel Inn in Epcot’s Mexico. I have to say, this restaurant was the surprise of the trip – in a good way! We weren’t sure what to expect, but the food was delicious and authentic, and the atmosphere dark and romantic. We will be back for sure!

Pork tenderloin at the California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the pork and the creamy polenta, and while I am not a pork person, even I have to admit that this one is a winner!

Ok, so this one technically isn’t a meal, but it’s practically big enough to be a whole meal! The Butterfinger Cupcake available at Starring Roles Cafe in Hollywood Studios is a chocolate cupcake with a fudge center (my fave part!), whipped vanilla frosting, and a hard chocolate shell covered in crushed butterfinger pieces. It’s huge, its delicious, and the best part is, it’s a snack on the disney dining plan (a definite value, considering it’s size!)

I hope these have inspired you to try a new restaurant next time you’re at WDW! (And if all I have done is make your mouth water…then I apologize!)

Review of Disney’s California Grill Restaurant

I was so excited to dine at the California Grill last week while we were in Disney World, I had heard so many good things, and couldn’t wait to see what the restaurant had in store!

It’s located on the 14th floor of the Contemporary Resort, which means it offers great views of the Magic Kingdom, and it’s nightly fireworks show. There are a few observation decks that you can go out on and take in the views and the fireworks, which is a huge perk in my opinion!

The restaurant itself is nice, it’s bigger than I was expecting, but upscale in it’s decor, and I loved the open kitchen and getting to watch the food being prepared. However….it does have its drawbacks, one being size (it is so big that it feels less intimate), and another being the noise level – it was super loud in there! Another negative, I am sad to have to say, was the number of children at the restaurant. I wasn’t expecting NO children (after all it IS Disney World, and they are everywhere!), but there were a TON of families with children dining at this restaurant, which only increased the noise and chaos levels

As for the food, I honestly was slightly disappointed by the selection. Since we were on the Disney Dining Plan, we were each allotted a drink (non alcoholic, I chose a Shirley Temple!), an entree, and a dessert. California Grill is a Signature Restaurant, meaning that it takes 2 Table Service credits for 1 meal (for those of you who don’t know what that means, it basically boils down to it costing more, it’s one of the ‘fancier’ restaurants at Disney World, so the cost is much higher than that of other sit down restaurants). The entree selections were sparse, only like 8 choices, and 2 were fish and 1 was pork so those were out for me (nota big fish or pork fan), so I ended up ordering the Oak Fired Filet Mignon, which came served on potatoes and Asparagus (which I don’t care much for so I had green beans instead). I didn’t much care for the filet, it tasted slightly burned on the outside, but the inside was cooked a perfect medium as requested. Overall the taste just didn’t stack up for me (which stinks because I DO love a good steak!)

My father also had the Filet, which he enjoyed, and my mother had the Halibut, while my husband opted for the Pork Tenderloin (which came with some AMAZING goat cheese/garlic polenta, it was awesome!). Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, but no one was going nuts over how amazing it was, which is how I wanted to feel about it

The dessert is another story though – it was AMAZING – I had one of those molten chocolate cakes, and it was so rich and delicious….I know that will happily dance in my dreams for many months to come! My husband had a chocolate croissant bread pudding, and my parents opted for a creme brulee. Dessert was definitely the bright spot to the meal!

There was a large wine and drinks menu, which my parents thoroughly enjoyed, so if you’re a wine lover, this might be a perfect spot for you, as they also have a bar/lounge area where you can enjoy some drinks

Overall, California Grill did NOT live up to the hype, and I probably won’t go back. Maybe I expected too much, but the food seemed overpriced, and the restaurant which I perceived to be “exclusive” felt the exact opposite – crowded, loud, and too big.

That being said, people love it here, so if you are unsure, you just might have to try it youself next time you’re in Walt Disney World!
